Q48 - I have a question related to introducing islam to children in their bringing up/education.

Question # 048

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rohmatullohi wa Barokatuh! I have a question related to introducing islam to children in their bringing up/education. Specifically, how can i start introducing islam to a 13-14 year old girl, who has basic understanding from "cultural heritage", but when i start talking about Allah and our religion, i receive a lot of "why" questions. I am willing to teach as much as i can, and at the same time I want to be very careful not to cause an adverse effect. Please advise: 1) what to start with; 2) any reliable books/articles/lectures for beginners, age appropriate (girls); 3) any other suggestions/advise. May Allah strengthen our iyman and increase our knowledge. Thank you, ali

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allah (swt) reward you for your concern.

Firstly, children`s tarbiyah (religious upbringing) is necessary from childhood (from birth). Therefore, ensuring that children grow up in an Islamic environment, and have a basic Islamic education is necessary. It is recommended to connect your daughter to reliable local female scholars (Aalimaat) so they can appropriately answer her questions. Try to enroll your daughter in a maktab / Islamic school program, where she can be surrounded by reliable scholars, and correct information. Our masjid offers a program for this age group, specifically to tackle their questions, and provide them with correct Islamic information, so if possible, enroll your daughter (https://www.smacanada.ca/eve-madrasah).

As for reliable information, avoid googling Islamic information and questions, especially when one is unable to decipher what is true. Seerah books and books about Sahabiyyat are recommended.

``Living as a Muslim`` (Hayatul Muslimeen) by Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (ra) is recommended as it is a comprehensive and simple overview of Islamic beliefs. Similarly, ``Easy Good Deeds`` by Mufti Taqi Uthmani (hafidhahullah) is recommended.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
