Q32 - What do the 3 times on the masjid timetable mean (begins, adhan, Iqama)? Am I allowed to start

Question # 032

What do the 3 times on the masjid timetable mean (begins, adhan, Iqama)? Am I allowed to start praying Zuhr or any of the other namaz when it is the beginning time, or do I have to wait for adhan to happen in order to begin praying (by myself)?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allah (swt) reward you for your concern.

Begins: refers to the time that the salah begins (so one`s salaah would be valid at that time).

Adhaan: refers to the time the adhaan is given in the masjid, so that musalees (congregants) can prepare when to arrive.

Iqamah: refers to the time iqamah is given in the masjid, meaning the congregants have arrived, and are standing to pray. If one is praying by themself, one may pray at the ``begins`` time (because the time for that salaah has commenced). However, even when praying alone, one should give the adhaan and iqamah and then commence his prayer. Without adhaan, his prayer would still be valid.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
